Overbought and oversold
Definition
Overbought is a market state in which price has risen too fast and an oscillator has moved into its upper extreme zone: RSI above 70, Stochastic above 80, CCI above +100. Oversold is the mirror image: price has fallen too fast and the oscillator is in the lower zone. It is not a trade signal but a condition for one: in a range and at a level, the extreme zones are where a pullback is expected, while in a strong trend the oscillator can sit in them for dozens of candles.
What the extreme zones show
An oscillator measures not the direction of price but its momentum: how fast and how far it has moved over the chosen period. While price fluctuates calmly, the indicator line stays in the middle of the scale. When the move accelerates, the line crosses the upper or lower band. That is the overbought or oversold zone: the market is "overheated", buyers or sellers have already spent their strength, and the probability of a pullback has grown.
| Oscillator | Overbought | Oversold | Standard period |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSI | above 70 | below 30 | 14 |
| Stochastic | above 80 | below 20 | 14, 3, 3 |
| CCI | above +100 | below −100 | 20 |
| DeMarker | above 0.7 | below 0.3 | 14 |
| Williams %R | above −20 | below −80 | 14 |
The bands are a convention. In the breakdown of the SuperTrend + Stochastic strategy the Stochastic bands are moved to 70 and 30 so the signal arrives a candle earlier, while the levels + CCI strategy keeps the indicator with its standard lines.
Why a zone is not a signal
The most common beginner mistake: see RSI at 75 and press "Sell". In a strong trend the oscillator enters the extreme zone and lives there: price rises, the indicator has been "overbought" for an hour, and every trade down closes as a loss. The extreme zone says only that the move is fast. Whether a pullback or a continuation follows is decided by context: is there a level nearby, what does the higher timeframe show, is this an impulse without corrections.
The zones work honestly in a range: price moves between support and resistance, the oscillator hits its band at each edge of the range, and the pullback really comes. The stronger the trend, the worse an entry from a zone against it works and the better one with it works: in an uptrend only oversold on a correction is taken, in a downtrend only overbought.
How to trade it in binary options
A binary options trade cannot be closed early, so an entry "on the reading" without confirmation turns into a bet that the pullback starts right now. The sequence that repeats across the blog's strategies:
- Oscillator in the extreme zone. The line has crossed the band or sits on it.
- Price at a level. Resistance for a trade down, support for a trade up. A zone without a level is skipped.
- Confirmation. A candle closed away from the level in the right direction, the oscillator returned from the zone into the channel, or the Stochastic lines crossed.
- Entry at the open of the next candle, expiration of one to three candles of the working timeframe.
- No more than one recovery per asset: if price went deeper into the zone, the move is stronger than it looked.
In the terminal
In BinoView Supercharts, RSI, Stochastic, CCI and DeMarker are added from the indicator catalog, and the zone bands are set in each one's settings. The Stoch Levels Overlay indicator moves the Stochastic zones right onto the candles and shades them: you can see when price is "in the zone" without looking below the chart. In the sequence screener the context panel shows RSI and Stochastic for the current candle streak, and the Stoch BB Reversal bot opens trades when the Stochastic leaves an extreme zone at a Bollinger band.
How it differs from divergence and a reversal
Overbought is the oscillator's position right now. Divergence is a discrepancy over time: price made a new high, while the oscillator drew a high lower than the previous one. Divergence is stronger than a single visit to the zone, because it shows the momentum is weakening rather than merely large. A reversal is a fact on the chart, a change in the structure of highs and lows. The zone and the divergence only raise its probability; the confirmation still comes from a candle at the level: a pin bar, an engulfing or a close back inside the range.
Frequently asked questions
Does overbought mean price is about to fall?
No. It only means the move up was fast and buyers may be running out of steam. In a strong uptrend RSI can hold above 70 for hours while price keeps rising. A trade down is opened not on the oscillator's reading but on a coincidence: the extreme zone, a resistance level and a candle that bounced off it.
Which readings count as extreme zones?
The standard: RSI 70 and 30, Stochastic 80 and 20, CCI +100 and −100, DeMarker 0.7 and 0.3. On a calm market the bands are narrowed (65/35 for RSI, 70/30 for Stochastic); on a volatile one they are widened (80/20 for RSI) to cut out noise. What matters is keeping the same bands across the whole series of trades, otherwise there is nothing to compare the statistics against.
Can I trade only from overbought and oversold zones?
In a clean range, yes: that is classic counter-trend trading. In a trend such entries produce a run of losses against the move. So the oscillator's zones are combined with a level, with the higher-timeframe trend or with a filter such as a moving average: the zone says "a reversal can be looked for", the level says "exactly where".
